Adopt-A-Street

Keep Durham Beautiful’s Street Adoption program provides an opportunity for individuals and groups to take active ownership of streets in their neighborhood or community.

When you adopt a street you promise to pick up litter along your street or block (one mile minimum) at LEAST twice a month.

KDB provides you with safety vests, litter grabbers, and garbage bags as well as an adoption sign with your name or the name of your group.

Show your pride in our community by making a commitment to appearance.  Take first step to a more beautiful Durham!  Contact us today to Adopt-a-Street near you!

Did you know?

Did you know that the North Carolina Department of Transportation spent over $15 million last year picking up litter off state roads?  Did you know that most of that litter was blown out of cars and trucks without the driver even knowing about it?  When you drive any vehicle on North Carolina roads you are responsible for what blows out of that vehicle.  From something as small as an apple core to something as big as a ladder, everything that comes off our vehicles is litter and can cause danger, as well as the cost of cleanup, on our roads.

Think an apple core is harmless because it is biodegradable? Think again!!  Deer and other critters like the smell of apples and fast food containers, so they congregate where they are thrown along our roads.  Wake County had the largest number of deer/vehicle rashes least year- over 1100, and there were 11 crashes in North Carolina last year that were fatal to the people in the cars.  Remember that the defninition of litter is garbage that has been placed in the WRONG PLACE. Apples cores are litter when they are on the side of our roads.
