Great American Cleanup

Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program, takes place annually from March 1 through May 31. In 2010 over 3.4 million hardworking volunteers donated more than 6.2 million hours to clean, beautify, and improve more than 14,000 communities during more than 35,000 events in all 50 states.

Activities included beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning seashores and waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter, planting trees and flowers, and conducting educational programs and litter-free events.

Any Keep Durham Beautiful activity that you take part in during March, April, and May becomes part of the Great American Cleanup.

Did You Know?

In 2009, Great American Cleanup volunteers:

  • collected 64 million pounds of litter and debris
  • planted 157,000 trees and 6,400 gardens, xeriscapes, and green spaces
  • cleaned 102,000 miles or roads, streets, and highways
  • diverted more than 243 million plastic (PET) bottles and more than 870,000 scrap tires from the waste stream
