We all live in coastal cities...
When we are in grade school we are taught about the water cycle, and how all water circulates on our planet. Water evaporates from the oceans and lakes into the sky where it creates clouds. The clouds gather and create rain that falls on our cities, mountains, farms, forests and suburbs. This rain soaks into the ground or runs into streams, rivers and lakes, and eventually ends up back in the ocean where it begins the cycle again.
Now think about what some people throw on the ground: gum wrappers, fertilizer, fast food bags, cigarette butts, plastic wrapping, oil, antifreeze, and even old batteries! All of this ends up in the ocean! So that makes us all coastal cities, no matter how far from the ocean we actually are.
If only one person dropped a paper bag there wouldn't really be a problem. Paper bags eventually biodegrade and go back into the soil. The big problem is that not everything that gets thrown on the ground is biodegradable, and unfortunately there isn’t only one person dropping litter! Lots of people litter, either on purpose or by accident, and much of it ends up in our water systems.
The ocean is a strong ecosystem but we are dumping more into it than it can handle! Learn more about litter! Be part of the solution, not part of the problem: DON’T LITTER!
