Cigarette Litter Pickup at Duke Hospital

  • Duke Hospital 2301 Erwin Road Durham, NC, 27705 United States (map)

Join us for a last minute service project at Duke Hospital on Erwin Rd on Tuesday, Dec 23 at 1PM!

Even though the hospital campus itself is smoke-free, that doesn’t keep folks from taking smoke breaks in front of the hospital or at the bus stop and discarding their cigarette butts on the ground. Cigarette butts are NOT biodegradable, and they contain toxins that make their way into our water when disposed of incorrectly (i.e. thrown on the ground). We will collect and bag cigarette butts from the bus stop and front area of the hospital to keep them from washing into our waterways and negatively impacting human health.

All materials will be provided, including gloves. This activity requires prolonged stooping/squating. Youth participation is at the discretion of the adults responsible for their care - certain areas are near moving cars. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Parking information TBD - please carpool or use public transit if possible. Transit and paid parking information is available here: https://www.dukehealth.org/hospitals/duke-university-hospital/parking-and-directions
