Our favorite time of year is here, and we're so excited to celebrate with you! Follow our Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky accounts to stay up-to-date on all the fun ways that you can celebrate Mother Earth this April, and check out our list of local events and resources on our Earth Month webpage!
The easiest way to honor Earth Month is by organizing a litter cleanup: on your street, in your neighborhood, at your school - anywhere you see litter in your community! We provide all the tools: litter grabbers, gloves, safety vests, and trash bags; You provide the power! Just use our Tool Lending Library to reserve supplies.
Make Earth Day every day by integrating some of these changes into your routine:
Need something? Try to find it secondhand before buying it new! There are a wealth of amazing thrift stores in Durham.
Reduce the amount of trash you create by shopping at a package-free store like Part & Parcel or Fillaree. Find other local stores that offer some lower waste options here.
Plant a garden! There are lots of great local plant sales happening this month (see our Earth Month webpage), or find a retailer near you that sells native, pollinator friendly plants at Durham Bee City.
Host a swap with your friends, family, or coworkers! It's a great way to declutter and find some new-to-you items to love. Check out this video for tips on how to organize a swap. Circular Triangle also hosts monthly swaps.
Support local agriculture by shopping at a Farmers Market! The Durham Central Park, North Durham, South Durham, and Black Farmers Market are all great local options.
Start composting or choose a new waste item to divert from your home or office waste stream! CompostNow and The ReCollective are two local businesses that can help. Durham residents can also use the new public composting bins provided by City of Durham.
