Tree Planting in durham

The City of Durham’s Urban Forestry Division is planting 4,000 additional street trees over the next three years

Since 2017, the City has planted 1,500 trees annually. Combined, this will total 8,500 new street trees by 2028. The street trees will be in the city right-of-way, typically meaning the space between the curb and the sidewalk. All new trees planted will cover a range of species that can thrive in an urban environment.

In addition, the City is conducting a canopy study and an inventory of all trees located in the city’s right-of-way. Together, the canopy and inventory assessments will measure current tree coverage within Durham’s urban growth boundary, understand the health of our current canopy, and help identify new suitable planting areas.

Keep Durham Beautiful is reaching out to communities in designated planting areas through education and volunteer engagement, as well as hosting tree giveaways in Durham neighborhoods for residents who would like to plant trees in their communities, whether in their yards, schools, places of worship, or other community spaces.
